Cynotilapia Afra Cobue (Orange Top) males are blue with black stripes. Males get yellow/orange on the forehead. Forehead marking starts early in these fish somewhere around 1.5-2". This is the only way I can tell their sex at a young age. The name for this fish has recently been reclassified as Cynotilapia zebroides instead of Cynotilapia Afra. Once a common fish in the hobby, this fish is now rare in the hobby. Males can be tough on females when breeding. Milder Mbuna with great color. Single males can be mixed with Peacocks and Haps.

Have you tried Smart Start Complete yet? It helps to keep your aquarium water cycle system woking and keep fish healthy. CAS uses it in our tanks. Our 12 oz. bottles take up the same space as one 3.5" or smaller fish in our 12 x 12 x 10 and larger boxes. This means you can ship a bottle with your fish order with no extra shipping charge in most cases. see for more information.

Base price is a 2.5" Male These fish are grown out from fry. This helps to keep the price down.

The image of the male is the curiosity of Matt Almony one of my customers. Other fish in the photo are not a cobue.

These fish are grown out from in-stock breeders.

Mildly aggressive mbuna that mixes well with most other mbuna, not of the same color, and mixes well with Haplochromines, milder Lake Victorians, and most Peacocks as well

Best kept in mixed-sex groups of six or more. Mild enough for single males to mix in all-male tanks with milder mbuna, milder peacocks, and milder smaller Lake Malawi Haplochromines that are not too large or aggressive.  It is hard to beat the color of an all-male African Cichlid Tank.

The best mix of sex for breeding is one male with five or six females.

Never mix two mbuna of a similar color

Please note: No sex is guaranteed on sex uncertain fish. Watch for groups with guaranteed males and females for certain sexed fish in a group. Broods are about 50/50.

See Compatibility Chart for More Information

Recommended Foods:  Xtreme Cichlid PeeWee, Cobalt Blue (Cobalt Aquatics) Cichlid Flakes or Spirulina Pellets or Flakes. Foods containing Spirulina help this fish to display the best color.
