Protomelas taeniolatus (Fire Hap) (Super Red Empress) is a German line-bred version of Red Empress. They tend to color at a smaller size than basic Red Empress; but, sometimes can be difficult to get to color. The line in their midbody may reappear when they are stressed or uncomfortable with a new tank.
The Base Price is for a 2.5-inch male. a few of these fish are being grown out of smaller sizes from the wholesaler and fry. I am having difficulty with breeding and the grow-out process on this fish. Most of them are brought into stock in 3" or large males from the wholesaler as well.
3/4 color males show a line in the middle which should go away when they get bigger and more comfortable in their tank
Mildly aggressive haplochromines mix well with most other haplochromines, peacocks, milder Mbuna, and milder Lake Victorians.
Part color males can sometimes look similar to part color Lethrinops Intermedius (Oto. Tetrastigma). It is not wise to mix males of these two fish when they are too similar in color. When they get to full color, they normally do better together.
Best kept in single male tanks with milder peacocks and milder Lake Malawi Haplochromines. It is hard to beat the color of an all-male African Cichlid Tank.
The best mix of sex for breeding is one male with five or six females.
