• Placidochromis sp. Phenochilus Tanzania (Star Sapphire)

Placidochromis sp. Phenochilus Tanzania Star Sapphire is the only fish from Lake Malawi that males develop bright white starspots. Males are blue with darker blue stripes until they reach about 4 to 5 inches. They turn bright blue with white starspots making them one of the most attractive fish in the cichlid world. Females are darker blue/gray with dark blue horizontal lines. This fish can be hard to breed and is not always available in the hobby. Farm prices are on the rise due to high demand and low supply of this fish. C.A..R.E.S. Program Fish, Endangered,  facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the medium term future. This fish is very popular in the hobby. Part Color Males are Bue with darker Blue Stripe and have yet to develop white blotches. 

Star Sapphire tend to get more aggressive with age. 

90 Gallon tank or larger recommended. 120-Gallon, four foot wide, or larger tank recommended for larger adults.  

This fish will be brought into stock in 3 + Males Only. Smaller sizes are occasionally on a special order list.

This fish is hard to spawn and does not spawn year round. Therefore, they are not always available in the cooler months. 

Base Price is a 3" Part Color Male. 

Please note part color males are blue with darker blue lines and are not showing white patches yet.

Mildly aggressive haplochromis that mixes well with most other haplochromis, peacocks, milder mbuna, and milder Lake Victorians. Males 3" and up do not like each other and two males are not likely to get along in the same tank. 

Best kept in single male tanks with milder peacocks and milder Lake Malawi Haplochromines. 

Best mix of sex for breeding is one male with five or six females. Very Hard to Breed. 120-Gallon, four foot Wide, or larger tank recommended.
