2. Aulonocara Micro-Predator, Peaceful to Mildly Aggressive, Lake Malawi
One problem, however, with Aulonocara is that many of their females look very much alike. In fact most are cream with brown horizontal stripes. This can lead to cross breeding which can be harmful.  One way to avoid this problem is to have an all-male tank.  Another way is to have one pair maximum from each sub group of Aulonocara. Aulonocara can be broken down into four main sub groups. Those groups are: (1) Chitande Type, 2) Jacobfreiberrgi, 3) Sand Dwelling, and 4) Stuartgranti. Males from the same group can sometimes be a problem.

Note: Most New World Cichlids do not mix well with Old World (African) Cichlids. Most of these fish do not mix with genesis of their same type due to aggressive spawning behavior. Note: The more fish listed in the OK and Maybe lists the better a particular fish is as a community fish. Fish with little or no OK and, or Maybe list are not good community tank fish. Some tank or farm raised New World cichlids that have become accustomed to Moderately Hard water conditions that would other wise require soft water may work in moderately hard water as well. Spawning these type fish in moderately hard water can be hard. Sometimes they may spawn; but the eggs will not hatch. To spawn this type fish successfully in moderately hard water, you may have to removed the eggs and hatch them on you own in softer water, then slowly add more moderately hard water until the fry adjust. All New World cichlids pfer caves and Java moss or other plants. Softer water types also require drift wood. Note drift wood can lower pH and can not be used with African Cichlids. In some but not all New World cichlids the following is true as well. Higher water temperatures above 80 T can cause spawns of more males. Temperatures around 78 F can cause an equal split of males and females from spawns. Lower temperatures, 72-77 can cause more females in a spawn. Also neutral or higher PH can cause more females in a spawn. Lower PH can cause more males in a spawn.
Due to higher aggressive nature of New World Cichlid spawns, females will guard eggs and fry from all other fish in the tank. Females have be know to kill off all other tank mates, especially males when guarding eggs and fry. I advise removing all males and if possible all other tank mates when a female is guarding eggs or fry. In some cases in larger tanks, if you provide a lot of java moss and other hiding places the rest of the fish will stay away from the female and her eggs or fry and you will not need to remove them. A good rule of thump with these fist is one hiding place per fish. Broken clay pots make excellent hiding places for these fish.   

O-1 Rainbows Schooling fish best kept six or more to a group, equal amounts of males and females or one extra female. Can be used as a differ fish for several varieties of cichlid fish. Preferred water: 72 to 79 F, PH 6.5 to 8.0, Soft to moderately hard water.

O-2 Cory Catfish, Senstive to aquarium Salt, can not be mixed with African cichlids due to salt. Shooling fish, best keep in groups of 6. Bottom feeders. Perfer soft water: but can tolerate a wide range of hardness, temperature, and PH.
